Classroom News
Please, check your child's assignment notebook for daily information and current homework. Direct instructions are given as to how to fill out the notebook and information to be included each day. No one should have a blank assignment notebook for the day. When you check the assignment notebook at home each night, it reinforces this learning strategy.

Dates To Remember
Hello Parents:
It's going to snow very soon! Conference week is upon us on the 11th,13th,and 18th. We should be reading a chapter book for November's bookreport due November 30th or before. Miss Peterson is joining our classroom on the 10th of November. She is a UMD student practicing to become an elementary teacher. Please, check on your child for their division skills and procedure. example: 3456 divided by 24. Now that the cold weather is upon us, please make sure your loved one is wearing a winter jacket, mitts, and hat everyday. 5th graders often think it's not cool to wear snowpants, but they do have playground time. Looking through the daily 'done' folder is always helpful to all of us :) See you at conference time!!!
On Tuesdays-Thursdays, we switch for Science and Social Studies in the AM. Expect the Social Studies book to be brought home every Tuesday night for reading, comprehension, and sharing with the family. Most of the tests will be every other week on a Thursdays. Multiplication flashcards should be used nightly to memorize all facts to 12x12. Our writing of multiple paragraphs will always be in cursive........Each paragraph must be 5 or more sentences long. Our goal is 5 or more paragraphs for each story or prompt this year.
Past "heads up" for parents of first time 5th graders: If your child is spending more than an hour doing homework, it's not because I've given homework to them. Please, stop them when the hour is over, and I will give out the consequence when they return to school the next morning........ They have enough time during the day to get their work done.. We need to practice our multiplication facts every night till we know them by heart......quiz them nightly, and throughout the school year..... We will be working on paragraph structure, reading our Accelerated Reader chapter books, and taking tests per book on the computer. Please, ask them to share the books being read throughout the month. Every child has a goal. We need to be reading every night for at least 30 minutes or more. Our Spelling tests are on Wednesdays and Fridays. Typically, we have a Social Studies test every other Thursday, so your child should bring home their Social Studies book every Tuesday night for you to ask them questions about the various chapters.
Your child must complete their daily school work. It's very important that they fill out the daily assignment notebook, and show you their work each night. Keep checking the daily assignment notebook, and if they're not filled out...give out the consequences.
Thank you,
Mr. Morse

Grade Level Overview
Reading: We will use both the NEW Basal reader Harcourt 'Storytown' series, and a number of different literature/trade-books. Harcourt provides an orderly pattern of different reading assessments. After each section of the book, students are tested and must score 80% on the assessments. Students will read and analyze the novels, and have a number of projects to do afterward. The projects will include such things as: writing a summary, writing letters,5 paragraph reports, and creating new endings to books, etc. We will read at least 30 minutes daily within the school day, and 30 minutes per day in the evening.
Mathematics: The title of our Math curriculum is 'Investigations'. The children will be in cooperative groups using problem solving strategies. Approaching the mathematics content through Investigations helps students develop flexibility and confidence in approaching problems. There will also be a textbook to strengthen the basic skills area of Mathematics.
Spelling: We will complete one unit per week. Each unit stresses a certain skill such as silent letters, long and short vowels, etc. We will take a pre-test on Wednesdays with a final post-test on Fridays. When a student receives an A+ on the Wednesday test he/she does NOT take the Friday test.
Science/Health: 5th grade Science/Health will deal with the following:
1. Life Science
2. Physical Science
3. Earth Science
4. Human Body
Students will have ample opportunity to do reports and work in cooperative groups.
Social Studies: Grade 5: We will be studying the United States: From Colonization and conflict to The United States Looks to a new Century.I will be testing every other Thursday on the average. Your 5th grader should be bringing their book home on Tuesday nights to share with you what we are learning and be ready for all tests to include essay questions.
